We had a security incident today.
Not a deer.
Not a fox.
Not a squirrel.
A turtle breached the perimeter and entered the yard.
The only problem?
I was away from base when the call came in.
So there I was getting the report from Mom, who had already assessed the situation and made one thing very clear:
She was not picking it up.
Meanwhile, the three hounds had gathered around the intruder like a security team that had absolutely no intention of actually helping.
Naturally, Dean was the first one on scene.
He walked over slowly, nose working overtime, completely fascinated by our unexpected visitor.
He sniffed the turtle.
Walked around it.
Sniffed the fence.
Walked back to the turtle.
Then looked at Mom like:
“Well... you gonna do something about this?”
Mom:
“Absolutely not.”
And that is when the irony hit me.
Dean.
The same hound who has escaped this yard more times than I can count.
The same hound who has ended up miles from home.
The same hound who has required citizens, vehicles, and occasionally the Puppy Police to recover him...
Was now conducting a full investigation into how somebody else got IN.
For several minutes, Dean paced the fence line trying to solve the mystery.
"There has to be a weak point somewhere."
Yes, Dean.
There probably is.
YOU KEEP FINDING THEM.
Meanwhile, Winchester stood nearby looking calm and professional, like he had already concluded the turtle posed no immediate threat.
Roscoe, of course, was judging everyone.
You could practically hear him thinking:
“You’re telling me THIS is what we’re scared of?”
At one point I’m pretty sure all three hounds were laughing at Mom.
And honestly...
The turtle probably was too.
Apparently, when Dean wants OUT of the yard, he can locate a breach with the precision of a military engineer.
But when asked how one turtle managed to get IN?
Complete mystery.
No leads.
No suspects.
Case cold.
🐕 Dean’s Official Statement:
"I don’t understand it. This perimeter is supposed to be secure."
Dad, from afar:
“DEAN.”
Current Mission Status:
🐢 Turtle — Successfully infiltrated the compound 👩 Mom — Refused physical engagement with suspect 🐕 Winchester — Observed professionally 🐕 Roscoe — Provided unwanted commentary 🐕 Dean — Lead investigator on a fence system he personally defeats on a regular basis 🚧 Fence — Once again under review 👨 Dad — Conveniently not home for any of this
The turtle was eventually escorted from the premises.
Mom survived.
The hounds remain smug.
And Dean is still deeply concerned about the security breach...
while somehow forgetting that he personally authored most of the escape routes. 😂🐾
